Liberalism – The Antithesis of Truth

On 02/15/2010, in Catholic, Fact, by Tom Voiland

Truth is Absolute and from One Source

The one thing we all search for in life, sooner or later, is Truth - its inevitable.  There is something innate about this quest because we all come from the Truth, it’s in us from birth, we are created by it and it’s an inseparable part of us.  That is until we choose to separate ourselves from the Truth.  Still, we will always search for the light and the peace of Truth.  Truth is absolute, pure and perfect, it’s clear and unapologetic, and unchanging because the Truth is God spoken to us by his Son through Scripture, Sacred Tradition and the Magisterium, the teaching authority of the Catholic Church.  The Truth, however, has become increasingly hard to find due to those who seek to obscure the Truth in their quest to defeat it.  Liberalism is the enemy in the War on Truth.  And for that reason there is no such thing as a liberal Christian or a liberal Catholic, those terms are oxymorons.

Liberalism Does Not Know Truth

Liberalism is the complete affirmation of the independence and importance of the individual, the empowerment of the person without regard to any moral authority. Christianity on the other hand is the dogma of the absolute subjection of the individual and of the social order to the revealed law of God and to focusing on loving your neighbor.  One doctrine is the exact antithesis of the other. They are opposites in direct conflict.  The most fundamental principle of liberalism asserts unrestrained freedom of thought, religion and conscience, while Christianity is based on the omniscience of God, the revelation that only through Christ (Christianity) can one attain salvation and that there are consequences for your actions.

What Does Scripture Say?

So what does Christ say about the Truth?  Well, for starters, he defines it unequivocally in John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”  Jesus is the Truth, thus His Word is the source of all Truth.  Everything that is True is borne of His Word.  Now, remember, a liberal reading this will scoff at it.  But of course, because liberals are completely enlightened via their intellectual superiority, right up to the point where their collection of reason has disqualified them from being subject to a higher authority.

Liberals are intrinsically conceited and condescending because they genuinely believe that through academic superiority they have achieved a level of thought that need not be questioned, even by God the author of the universe.   The irony here is that us Christians find liberalism utterly laughable because we know the Truth, we may not live it all the time, but we know it and we are gladly subject to it.  However, what Christians in America aren’t amused by is the decimation of our culture because of the pervasive negative effect on our core and founding values by the onslaught and propagation of liberalism in the US over the past 40 years.  Read what God says through the Prophet Jeremiah (17:5);

“Thus says the Lord: Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings, who seeks his strength in flesh, whose heart turns away from the Lord.  He is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season, but stands in a lava waste, a salt and empty earth.”

The Poison of Liberalism is Thousands of Years Old

Any student of ancient history knows that the Roman Empire was one of the most successful known to man and that is was the infiltration of liberalism that brought the Empire ultimate destruction.  Saint Paul wrote letters to the Roman Church as we know.  Reading this passage (Romans 1:18-32) makes me want to rename it Paul’s letter to the liberals, but that ain’t going to happen.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them…….For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man…….Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.  For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator……. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error…….

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness; they are gossips, haters of God, arrogant, boastful………”

The Liberal Scorecard

So that I’m not accused of bloviating without providing facts to back it up, let’s look at some of what liberalism has brought America over the past 40 years.  Let’s start with the sexual revolution, which gave us the proliferation of promiscuity, leading to an increase in sexually transmitted diseases, and the terribly unfortunate consequence of unwanted pregnancies, that are dealt with via abortion on demand.  Then there’s the explosion of the drug culture, which has ruined more lives, more marriages, more careers, more childhoods, etc than we’ll ever know.  Women’s liberation, once hijacked by feminists, and in tandem with the sexual revolution and the wide acceptance of birth control (“the pill” ) left marriages in shambles via an exponential increase in divorce, along with another assault on children’s welfare (with abortion), single parent homesThe final outcome of the (feminist’s) women’s lib movement are women who are completely torn between their inherent need and want to be wives and mothers, and a socially engineered demand that they equate themselves with all things male.

After liberals had God thrown out of American schools and made disciplining children criminal – both literally and figuratively – we’ve seen a significant decrease in the overall respect for authority in this country by not only kids, but adults once those kids grow up.  Then there’s the expansion of the welfare state,  lead by liberal politicians who felt it their responsibility to take care of people versus incenting them to take care of themselves.  What has that lead to in America?  Throngs of people who believe they are entitled to not only government hand-outs, but freebies in the private sector.  Thanks to social programs being greater than 50% of our federal budget, we’re strapped with a $12.5 trillion dollar national debt.  And would anyone reading this post born say before 1970 deny that people born in later years are much more self-absorbed and entitlement driven than we were?

Add to all of this environmental extremism, children being more sexually active, homosexuality as an acceptable alternative lifestyle, people changing gender, political correctness, America becoming the most litigious society on earth.  None of this is consistent with Conservatism or Conservative thought which is (was) the hallmark of the successes of America.  I wonder, is the Woodstock generation proud of their score?

    Well, sure, some kind of legislation is needed, but it’s the kind that involves asking the rich to pay more to support the stable, educated, free society that allowed them to make all that money in a genteel fashion. And that takes more guts than I’ve seen from anyone in Washington, except maybe Bernie Sanders.
